206 water temperature & fuel consumption

I just got a second-hand 206 1.4L petrol (2000 model). It has a coolant temperature varies between 70 deg (down hill) and 90+ deg (city). Is it normal?

What will be the normal fuel consumption rate with air-con. on?

Yes, your cooling system temperature range is normal. The thermostac closes to allow the coolant to warm up as quickly as possible-rapid warming up when starting from cold reduces engine wear and pollution-and when the coolant temperature reaches 89 degrees C the thermostac opens to allow the hot coolant through to the radiator to cool it down. Going down hill significantly reduces engine load and therefore engine heat as well. Using an A/C imposes an additional load on the engine and will adversely affect its fuel consumption. By how much, you can easily try it on your car with a tankful of fuel with the A/C on and without. Tan

Yup; that's normal.

Running the air conditioner will increase fuel consumption, but it's impossible to say by how much. :)

However, I can give you some pointers. In the recent really hot period and in the city, running the air conditioning in our Ka increased average fuel consumption by approximately 20% . . . 30 mpg rather than 36 mpg. On a longer run, the difference is less significant and typically about 5% (41 mpg rather than 43 mpg) when it's quite hot.

I'd not be without out, and of course I have to run it all year round (ten minutes a week, minimum, to keep the seals nicely lubricated), but it does make a difference.
