1998 Grand Prix recall repair problem

This car was recalled to fix lower pinion bearings in the power rack and pinion assembly. At the same time I got the 100,000 miles scheduled maintenance which included tune-up, trans. service, oil change and inspection of all belts hoses, etc. Two weeks later the power steering failed and fluid leaked from the passenger sided wheel area - the same area involved in the recall. The dealer said the belt got into the front shaft seal on the power steering pump causing the failure. The pump in on the driver's side of the engine. They say the repair and the failure are unrelated - that nothing they did involved the power steering unit itself. My question is if that is true? Are there fittings, hoses, etc that need to be disconnected, reconnected during the repair? If air got into the line, would it cause the pump seal to fail and wreck the belt? Would a faulty repair cause so much resistance in the steering that the pump seal would fail - would that be noticeable before the failure? I just dislike the timing. Get recalled and then a related area fails? Too pat. Any ideals, info or help you could give would be appreciated.
