GM 3.1 fuel injectors replaced...

Hi

Last week i changed fuel injectors on 1996 Pontiac Grand Am, with 3.1 engine... Ever since it has been difficult to start the car especially if the engine is hot, and you can smell the exhaust (running too rich?) when first started. Other than that engine runs fine.

New injectors are Borg-Warner brand and all six were changed.

Do the new injectors cause this problem (not being AC Delco brand), or could it be something else..

Thanks for any help

I'd make sure all the electrical connections are good. I'd also pull the fuse for the computer clear the memory to force it to relearn for the new injectors. What prompted you to replace the injectors?

Reason for changing them were that injector #3 failed, and injectors #2 and #5 started going out as well.

You'd need to pull the injectors and fuel rail as an assembly and energize the fuel pump to put pressure in the system. Then wait and see if any of them start leaking fuel.

You won't set any OBDII codes for the leak itself, but it may result in a misfire, or a rich mixture, both of which may set a code.

If it is causing a rich or fuel smell out the exhaust (mine did on my olds when it went south (new refurbs)), you can do a compression check, and when you release the pressure, you'll see fuel coming out of the compression testers.
