Octane for 91 Grand Prix

I have been using Regular (87 octane) for a 91 Grand Prix, which is what the manual says to use.

I notice sometimes a gassy smell sometimes, and I'm wondering if I should jump up to midgrade ( 89 ) or even premium ( 91 ) octane...

I don't see how the grade of gas could possibly relate to a gassy smell sometimes, but a higher grade won't harm the engine.
