Unless modified, the cigarette lighter is inert when the car is not in READY. A tickle charger directly connected to the battery is a better solution . . . be sure to put an inline fuse.

We are about to have some exceptionally frigid weather here near Boston. Unfortunately, I need to go out and will be parking my car outside for 4 hours or so. That has me wondering whether one can use a trickle down charger that plugs into a cigarette lighter in a (2005) Prius.

My readings do show that they can be jumped, but I hope there is no need for that. My battery has not had any problems, but then it also has not been subjected to such cold temperatures before.

I have a 2007 model.... When the 12 Volt battery died last year I replaced it myself.

While I had the battery exposed, I went ahead and mounted a 'cigarette lighter' receptacle with 10 Amp fuse in the little plastic panel located just below the access hole to change the stoplight bulb. That way I can plug in a tire pump, small inverter or phone charger directly to the 12 Volt battery without having to have the car ON.

You could connect your trickle charger via the same receptacle..... Of course getting back there is a problem if the battery is too dead to activate the electric trunk lock.
