I'm not familiar with your exact car but here is something to try. Allow yourself a couple of hours in dry weather as the door will need to open for a while.

I would take off the handles etc. and door trim panel on the back door,

*carefully* remove the plastic sheet (you will need to put it back later with waterproof adhesive tape) and have a look at the door lock unit. There should be two wires running to it. If you can disconnect the unit (there might be a plug and socket in the door) try a 12V transformer (or a spare 12V battery) with a couple of wires to try to operate it manually. Reverse the polarity of the wires to activate/deactivate the lock unit.

If it doesn't work, then replace the unit. If it does work, check the wires as they pass through the door pillar into the door, they may have become damaged and you will need to replace them. Easy to do this with a couple of wires and some scotch clips. Make sure the rubber grommet is in place to protect the new wires.

Since you described the normal operation of the other doors, it has to be a localised fault at that particular door.

I used a similar method to this to locate the fault in an Audi 80 powerlock system.

Hope this helps.

If not, post again and describe in detail what happened and I'll think of something else.

Don't think you need to be familiar with a car to check a faulty door lock.

It's not by any chance a child lock jammed half way?

Thank you very much for your advice. I also think the failure lies within the very door. Directly after switching on the central lock follows a diminishing buzzing sound inside the damaged door at the place, where the outer handle is positioned. Like some part was spinning in vain. Another strange thing is in one out of ten tries the door locks. Well I probably have to open that thing. Hoping to be able to reassemble all the parts afterwards again :)

I checked out the child lock. But it seems to be ok and has never been used before. There is this whirring sound inside the door, when I activate the central lock. Someone suggested it could be the motor of the lock within the door (hope I got this right). I don't know if these motors/locks are all the same for any car. Our mechanics had a constant problem with my Rover anti-brake system and were not able to fix it (but that's another story). So I got kind of suspicious, how they would handle this issue,

Be careful and open it in a basin. The small piece that falls out may be the part you are looking for to fix it.

If the lock is beyond repair, might I suggest...

who can supply replacement motors with brackets to fix them inside doors for any car.

Code: YD79L Description: Car Door Lock 2Wire Price: £7.99

Also a 5Wire (control) type,

Code: YD78K Description: Car Door Lock 2Wire Price: £9.99

I fitted an entire set to my second car (Austin Metro) and the car gave up before the locks did!

The second (5 Wire) type should have read...

I cut and pasted and forgot to amend!

I doubt Rover make the motor. But finding what else uses it might be more difficult. My older Rover uses Kiekert, as did some others in the range.

R8 rover 200s use motors made by Rockwell...
