1995 900S slow speed engine cooling fan

My 1995 900S cooling fan comes on as soon as I turn on the ignition key, and it seems to run all the time. When I finish a journey, the fan stays on for about 20 seconds and then stops. Is this normal? The cooling system is OK and the engines runs at normal temperature with the gauge at 9 o?clock. Does the fan turn off when the car is actually moving? The trouble is one cannot monitor the fan when the car is moving!!!

Any help here is appreciated.

Alex.

I've had several Saabs, and they all had the fan run 20 sec or so after the engine stops (often but not always). I believe the fan cycles off and on while driving.

Problem solved! My 900S is a Singapore one which has an A/C mod to have the slow speed fan come on all the time the ignition is on. I found this mod in the cable connection to the A/C trinary switch assembly in front of the radiator. I removed this mod and now the fan only comes on when the engine temp goes above normal. Everything else works as expected. This mod connects the black and yellow wires together in a short link inserted into the 4 wire cable connector. It is easily removed.

Nice catch... how on earth did you figure that out?

I figured that since the car was a Singapore new one it would have been optioned with mods to suit a hot, city style regime, so a slow speed continuously operating fan would be likely. Most AC systems have a trinary pressure switch to turn on the slow speed fan when the AC pressure builds up, so I took a good look at that switch. On the 900 it is behind the grill just before the radiator. There it was!

The fan still comes on when engine temp goes high, and does still keep going for a few seconds after shut down. All very satisfactory. Cheers.
