'97 900SE Thermostat?

So I haven't driven the wife's '97 900SE 2.0T (automatic) for a month or two, then after driving it yesterday for 20+ minutes (in 32F/0C weather) I noticed the engine temp gauge hadn't moved; pegged to the bottom. Three weeks ago, the coolant needed to be topped-off again (was topped-off 3 months ago too [maybe 4 - 6 oz each time]). No leaks evident. No white smoke/exhaust. Could this be a thermostat failure or something more seriou$? Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me as if you need a new themostat. I had similar symptoms on my 1996 900SE, and delayed getting it fixed because (a) I have become concerned about how much ANY work costs on this car, and (b) I could relieve the condition by putting a piece of aluminum foil in front of the radiator. A few weeks ago, I finally bit the bullet, and figured the local gas station could fix the problem, since it was a very routine repair. The total cost was just over $100.

I really don't see how that follows.

If the temperature gauge isn't moving at all, not even after a considerable while running, then either the temperature sender or the temperature gauge is disconnected/faulty. Nothing to do with the thermotat.

If the thermostat was sticking open, the engine would eventually reach operating temperature - it would just take a long time getting there.

Agreed, the engine would eventually reach operating temperature one way or another. Usually it fails the other way around so the engine gets too hot.

Kenneth, My suspicions and your idea were correct; a faulty thermostat. Thanks to all for their input.
