faulty boot (trunk) light switch

1996 saab 9000 cd ... boot (trunk) light stopped working ... assumed it was failed bulb ... but when I took it apart it had completely corroded terminal white wire attached to...

got a spare second-hand light unit... but now can't work out what the 3 positions on the switch are supposed to do... looking from front with switch on left hand side (seems unit can be mounted either way)... it seem switch up is off, down is on... but in the middle position it seems unsure... there is a metal contact on the switch which is a bit loose and is intermittent - with boot open its on if it makes contact with the "white wire terminal" else off .... which position should switch be in for light to be on only when boot is open? I would have though mid position... but this doesn't reliably work on my switch... looking at the switch contact itself, I can't figure out how it knows when the boot is open? is there a contact switch elsewhere... and I should switch the light unit to the bottom "on" position... and maybe the light will be switch off by another contact switch??

Hope this makes sense ... I've lost the owners handbook ... and with it being winter I'd like this switch to work ... but don't want a flat battery! Andrew

hmm... should of though of this before .... but by peeping through the ski flap I can see into the boot area with the boot shut...

seem with the switch at the bottom ... what I though was permanent "on" is really "on" only when the lid is open... so there must be a contact elsewhere... not sure what purpose the mid switch position serves, if any?

I guess to be safe I could always switch it off and > 1996 saab 9000 cd ...

In my 19995 9000, one position on the switch in the hatch also controlled the dome light that came on when the car doors were opened. It didn't work too well, sometimes it would leave the light on and the battery would run down. The positions may be: auto on for everything with the door/hatch open; on all the time, off all the time.

How do you open the boot with your hands full?
