Nobody in their right mind would buy from a spammer.

And yet, he's still a spammer, so why would anyone consider doing business with him?

I mean, the same people who complain (rightfully) that their mailbox is full of crap, will then encourage the exact same behavior in Usenet? I don't understand it.

Well I'm not going to say whether I agree or disagree but at least it was short and pertinent to the newsgroup - if you happen to live in the US!

Well, if you had contributed something to our discussions or solved some problems, people would have been more understanding that you sneaked in your web site.

So, it's on-topic spam. Are you saying that the viagra spams are OK for those who need it too?

only if it is sent to the alt.rec.limpdicks newsgroup.

If someone had posted a message looking for a specific item and that was a suppliers specialty, my own feeling is that a reply, very simply, that"Ihave it for sale" is not spam.

If the post is commercial, unsolicited, not as an adjunct to a previous post, it is SPAM and does not belong here. However if someone posts looking for a reputable parts supplier and I have a related experience and "plug" a supplier that I , personally have used to my benefit, I see that as good ADVICE and nothing else.

Is you post your own wheels for sale, mayybe that is a bit close to the dividing line but if it is person to person, I can live with that.

But if you post your own COMMERCIAL addess: an URL, A phone number or a mailing address....IT DOES NOT BELONG HERE.

Psst, go back and search. ;)

It's not my website and I have contributed here.

Hmm, let me get back to you when I've finished reading alt.penis.enhancements.

:)

My point is that I personally, do not mind the occassional on topic advert in a newsgroup that I have to go and wilfully fetch. If I'm reading about Saabs, I don't mind finding about a supplier that I might otherwise not know about.

On the other hand, I don't like it in email.

BTW, you'll find the viagra users over in the BMW newsgroup I believe.

;)

Right. There's a guy on the aircooled-VW group who turns out to be one of the top vendors of classic VW stuff, but I didn't know it for months. People kept saying "I bought it from John", and also there was a very active guy named John giving out consistantly reliable good advice. After a bit, I put the two together and realized he's the John people keep buying stuff from.

"Hey, I've got a rear shelf for a classic-900, in good shape, in the Milwaukee area. Anyone interested?" a mailing address....IT DOES NOT BELONG HERE. Yup. Most ISPs will whack a usenet spammer's account as well; fair warning and all that...

Is that a joke? I don't get it. Do you feel somehow superior to BMW drivers? ...or are you jealous?

The usual method of bringing people to a website from usenet groups is to include the URL and a brief line about what it is in your sig. Then participate in the discussions. The sig "advertisement" is within nettiquette guidelines as long as it's not over three lines long.

In article , Fred.Wills@allspam spouted forth into alt.autos.saab...

Nope, as Saab drivers we don't need to "Feel" superior, we leave that to BMW drivers. As Saab drivers, we just have a smug knowing grin (those who watch the UK BBC Top Gear program on TV will know what I mean).

Note, the above is in jest. I'm sure there are some very considerate, likeable normal BMW drivers out there. Just that I'm yet to meet them, and those that can't a new one come replacement time seem to have spent their monies on VW Golf GTi and TDi models, but still drive as wrecklessly.

No really, there are some, they're the ones that have the "barrier hooks" optional accessory fitted so that they can stay in lane 3 on the M25 whilst using their mobile phone and taking notes, thus leaving the other two lanes for the rest of the motoring population.

Well Carl, you were not the originator of the post that I replied to, but being a fellow SAAB owner (as well as BMW owner) I do not understand your "jest." If you are not one how exactly would you know that they "feel superior?" Also, don't forget that (at least in the US) SAABs are also considered to be "status symbol" cars, especially by many non-SAAB-owners.

You see, the reason I signed my post with the list of my current cars is to show that I own *both* SAABs and BMWs. Now perhaps I'm an atypical owner (of both marquees) since I never buy any of my cars new, but prefer to find nice secondhand cars and then do a bit of work myself to get them in good shape.

In any case, I think that both are good cars, (obviously or I would not have purchased them) but to be perfectly honest the BMWs are much better driving cars. A bit less economical (2.5 liter six and 4.0 liter eight BMW vs. 2.3 & 2.0 liter SAAB 4 cyl turbos) but the handling difference of RWD vs FWD is like night and day. I often hear how horrible RWD is supposed to be in the snow, but I have some good snow tires on my 325i and it goes as well in the white stuff as my AWD Ford Explorer (which I only really use for trailer towing). It is a non-issue IMO.

I do like the SAABs because they are easy to work on and pretty reliable, but those are some of the same attributes that I like about the BMWs. Good engineering is good engineering.

Anyway, don't dismiss the BMW offhand without giving them their due consideration. There are many of us who own them because they are fine driving cars, not becasue of what everyone else thinks they cost. BTW, what's a new 9-5 go for these days? $35-40k? I have spent a grand total of $20k on *both* of my BMWs, and of course i did not have to pay all of the interest on a new car loan. Funny, now that I think about it, that's almost the same amount I paid for the two used SAABs too. So for the price of one new SAAB 9-5, I have a car for me, my wife, my son and my daughter... How's that for economy cars?

I see, so your generalizations have no factual basis, just a few nice stories...

I think this must be a UK (or euro) thing then, because it seems only the SAAB'ers from over your side of the pond have that problem. Over here, in the US, all drivers suck equally regardless of what brand they are driving... Finding someone who cares about their cars and their driving *at all* is a treat.
