Re: 1987 900 8 valve Buzzing Fuel Pump

Can you describe the buzzing a little more? Is it a low pitch

> droneing, or a high pitched buzzing, or what?

And where are you hearing it come from?

I guess the next thing I'd do is put a pressure gauge on the > fuel line.

Yup - at this point, there's not a whole lot else left in the fuel delivery system. I suppose if the valve isn't opening at all, the overpressure could make the pump work harder than it should, making things noisy.

I also have had some buzzing starting recently. I also had the shakes at about 2000 RPM in the lower gears. After checking the EGR system (which I believe starts functioning at around 2000 RPM), I pretty much gave up and resigned myself to mentioning it to my garage next time the beast is in.

After getting a vague hint about fuelling problems causing the shakes (I've had the front end pretty much completely replaced in stages now, from the inner drivers to the ball joints; tyres as well) and putting that together with the fuel pump starting to make noises, I was very pleased to find that bypassing the fuel over-pressure switch has fixed both. I'd have no idea what to do otherwise.

Am I on the right lines here (Dave/Grunff), or have I been a blessed recipient of coincidence?

Jason - if it's a turbo, it's worth a try. You did hint that money is tight, so for the price of a 4mm hose joiner and half an hours work, I'd say go for it.

Good luck pal,

Paul

Did it have the shakes specifically at 2000rpm, or 2000rpm and above?

If the former, then IME that kind of problem is almost always either ignition or injector related. Could have been as simple as a loose ignition lead or injector plug.

The shakes were at 2000 RPM specifically, perhaps present below 2000 RPM as well but not that noticeable. Once above that, they were gone. I did check the tightness of the sparks and re-set my HT leads at the weekend. Case solved :) Thanks for the tip.

I've had somewhat similar symptoms when the rear fuel pump has failed. It gets loud enough to be heard while driving and then engine problems begin. I've had symptoms as if the engine was having a vapor lock problem and, in the most recent failure, the engine stopped completely for a moment before resuming operation.
