Terrible Screaming Noise

I recently purchased a 1987 Saab 900, 4 door, normally aspirated. Ishut it off coming home from work (it was a pretty cold night, but notbelow 30f I'd say) The next day I started it up and it made aincredibly loud screaming noise (one could say squealing as well). Ichecked the condition of the belts, they all apear fine, I didn't checkthe tension though... It seems the noise is coming from the front ofthe engine, which has me scared since all the moving parts up there areexpensive. A few notes about the noise: it makes it wether in gear ornot, makes it whether the clutch is engaged or not, and there seems tobe no change in loudness or pitch of the noise in any change in theabove conditions.PLEASE tell me it's just water on the belts, I live in Oregon, so it'sVERY wet here.Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am only well versed in theworkings of the Chevy 350, which the SAAB is, obviously, very different.

Do you deny it shrinks when hot too ?

Yes. It might shrivel, but not necessarily shrink. Can you say that for all rubber? Because tyres expand when hot, not shrink.

Try playing a hair dryer on a rubber band. I didn't mean shrivel btw - I meant to shrink reversibly.

Not sure if it's only natural rubber or whatever. Synthetics may be different. It's something to do with molecule alignment AIUI.

Do they definitely ? Maybe vulcanising affects it ? Also what percentage is natural rubber these days btw ? The steel cords will certainly expand and I'll bet the steel will 'win' over the rubber so that might be the reason.
