fan clearance in '55 C-K?

Anyone running an R-engine in a '53-55 C-K? I'm having an issue where my fan is very, very close to the fan shroud at the top center; i've tried both standard and R3 motor mounts (a little better with the standard ones, but not much) and here's the weird thing; the viscous drive, pulleys, and water manifold all came off the engine that was in the car when I bought it and I never noticed myself having this issue until I swapped the "original" '63 289/FOM for a R1/4-speed. Now it hits under moderate acceleration or cornering.

Other than that, the car's fine :) needs a little carb tuning but seems to want to act like a real car.

Can you shim (up) the tranny mount a bit?

I think that would make it worse; it's hitting on the sloped bit, more like the fan is just too far forward.

Is it possible that I might have the tranny mount in backward? would it even fit like that?

AHA!!!

I think I've figured out what the clutch noise I've been experiencing is. I just remembered that I was unable to find bolts of the specified length to bolt the tranny mount to the bellhousing and I used the next size longer. I did not think that this would be an issue; it did not appear to be one when I assembled everything. Perhaps if I remove those bolts I will find signs that they have kissed the pressure plate. That would make me happy to find that noise.

Now for the mount... on a stickshift, which way should the studs be offset WRT the bolt holes? I do recall that I had to pull the engine forward maybe 1/4" to get everything to line up when dropping the engine down for the first time.

Get rid of the "R" water manifold...

Water manifold actually came off a '63 standard 289 with A/C (has the two bosses for the heater hose fittings) I am not aware of any differences between that and an R1 however (can't verify as my parts books seem to have disappeared into the ether in my recent move...)

N8 is it possible that you have a truck water manifold? I had the same problem in reverse when putting a '63 289 V8 in my pickup because it had the car water manifold instead of the truck allowing the fan to strike the lower radiator frame .

I wasn't aware that truck V8 manifolds were different. I have a

289/Powershift in my '64 Champ with a viscous driven fan and it is real close to the radiator. However, the engine/tranny uses the factory mount set up frond and rear.

All of this just proves that switching from anything that the original car came with will entail problems of some sort.

At least in a C-cab, they mount the water pump significantly higher than a car manifold. I know what those look like, I don't have one of those.

OK, that's not it. I just looked at some bellhousings and it appears impossible that the bolts would be interfering with the pressure plate. But it looks like I will have to R&R it anyway because...

After looking at a couple bellhousings and the parts books, it appears that I used a Lark bellhousing as a pattern for assembling my rear mount. All of the bellhousings I looked at had the mount offset the same way as mine is. However one of the bellhousings had some spacers on it. Looking in the parts book it appears that there were two different kinds of spacers used on C-Ks only - one for 3-speeds and one for 4-speeds. Does anyone know how to tell the difference between the two, i.e. how thick are the spacers for each application? Of course the parts book would not impart such helpful information and the shop manual is silent on the issue. I can't see how this would help my fan issue but I'm willing to try anything, and I might as well "make it right." The only bellhousing I could find that I was sure was for a

4-speed (because it had the Chevy bolt pattern) did not have the spacers, as IIRC it came out of a '62 Daytona hardtop.

The bell you got from me was from a Hawk.

Unfortunately, due to trunk space constraints at SB, it's now in Lee's barn :(
