On Saturday or Subday, I looked up at the TV, which was set on Speedvision, and saw a photo of Clay. His year of birth and of death were under the photo. I have no idea how he died. He was a F1 driver of some note - widely admired, respected... and liked.. IIFC, it was at a Long Beach GP that he took an escape road and ran, still at high speed, into a parked race car. He never walked again. That doesn't mean that he didn't race. though. In specially adapted cars, he ran high speed and/or long distance rallies, which some people consider harder than F1 races. I think that he won some - pehaps one of the long distance ones.
It was in this mode, as a handicapped racer, that perhaps he served the sport and humanity the most - showing that one should not dry up and blow away when faced with seemingly insurmountable problems.
RIP, Clay
