2001 Outback Check Engine Light

Our 2001 Outback, 2.5 liter, 48,000 miles on it, has been to the dealer 3 times in the past month for the check engine light. The problem, according to the dealer seems to be a mis-fire in one of the cylinders, but not always the same one, so a tune up was performed during the second visit. A few days later the light was on again -- it was reset on the third trip and sure enough three days later it is on again.

BTW -- the tune up included new plugs, wires, fuel filter and air filter.

Any help / direction would be appreciated.

What are you talking about? (or smoking) TG

getting spark out, maybe the ECU is bad and misdetecting misfires...

My '98 w/113k miles is starting to do the same thing. Got a CEL, plugged in the laptop, 1+2 misfired. Dealer replaced wires for 1+2 and coilpack. Got another CEL on the beginning of a 1k trip, kept going. The light was on intermittently, plugged in the laptop when I got home and 3+4 misfired.

Now, I'll probably replace the wires for 3+4, but I've also got a cracked y-pipe, so I'm wondering if that's doing something.

Is this car a manual, if so, there is a glitch in the ECM. What needs to happen is the ECM needs to be sent to SOA and the reprogram it. I'v run into this problem before. After reprogramming the ECM the car never came back for the misfire code.
