The stick on my '92 legacy is making noises as if it needs grease. The shifting is loud. Is there a way to somehow manually grease it or is it all sealed up. I looked under the rubber boot but saw that I would most likely have to remove part of the console too. I don't want to do this if there's nothing that can be done under there.

It's a bit of a chore IIRC. You will have to remove all or part of the center console; at least enough that you can get the boot off. Screws hidden by carpet hold the boots metal flange in place. From there you have to remove a bolt to disconnect the linkage, and then remove the shift lever by loosening a snap-ring (underneath) and/or pulling up hard. You'll find a steel ball and a 2 (?) piece nylon bushing. I think these are designed to work w/o grease, but you might try a little anyway, or get a new set of bushings.
There are two "U" joint like ends on the linkage rod, one you've already disassembled, and another underneath, at the tranny end. Clean and grease these as well.
I'll comment that it is probably easier in the long run to simply pull the entire shifter assembly, and service it on the bench. If things look bad, ie rust or severe wear, you'll probably want to hit a salvage yard for a replacement assembly anyway.
And this is from memory at least 5 or 6 years old, and from a newer Legacy, but yours should be similar at least. If you get lost, or I'm way off the mark, let me know and I'll see if I can't find the '92 service manual, and scan the appropriate pages for you.
