Hi,
You probably have the type of piston that has to be screwed back into the caliper (common when a disc brake caliper's used for the handbrake, as opposed to the type that has a small drum brake built into the center of the rotor.) It should go clockwise until it's bottomed out, then it will work its way back out--self-adjusting--as you apply both the regular and hand brakes.
You need to use a tool to screw it back in. Subaru has a special tool No. 1234567ABCDEFG or some such that probably costs megabucks if you can find it. OR, go to the hardware store and get a small valve key for manual lawn sprinkler valves. It's a piece of 1/4" or so rod with a little "Y" end--works like a charm and only costs a coupla bucks (AND looks identical to Subaru tool no. whatever it is in my book!)
Good luck!
Rick
