forester stalling issue

I have a standard '98 Forester that, all of a sudden, started shuddering violently, like when you first learned to drive a stickshift. Since I was on my way to the airport, I didn't have the luxury of pulling over and figuring out what the problem was. As I neared the airport, the car started stalling, both at high speeds (in 3rd gear), and at idle. Currently, the car starts up just fine, and spools up to about 1500 RPM, and then drops slowly down to 0, and stalls. This happens even if the accelerator is floored. Any ideas as to what could cause this sudden occurance?

Thanks, Winn

Water in the gas or plugged fuel filter would be my first thoughts. ed

Hi

Sounds like something related to your gas supply -- I had that happen to me, but on a totally different car. Perhaps replace the fuel filter (not sure if a forester has two filters or just one), fill up with premium gas and put some gas system cleaner in.

Hope this is of use to you. Remco

I had the same problem in a 2000 Forester and thought it was fuel related, but it turned out to be the ignition coil and it had to be replaced.
