radiator hose clipped..

hey,

so i'm just shy of the 50k mark on my '04. I was driving along the highway last night and noticed some smoke and a funny smell coming into the car, paid no mind to it. Later, stopped at Dunkin' to get some coffee, i hear a pop and then sizzle sounds, it realize something burst and is leaking. I pull up to the drive way and inspect under the hood, I find splash/stains over the coolant reservoir, can't explain those, but squeezing around I see that the top most hose to the radiator is clipped on the side facing the fan. any ideas of what can be causing my radiator hose to get clipped by the fan?

On the '04 STi, there's the possibility that the flexible radiator hose just under the plastic, flattened air intake on the left hand side of the engine compartment (when looking at it head-on) has had a hole rubbed in it. In the stock part, there's an extra sleeve in there to protect it, but the real fix is to get the superseded part replaced with the shorter hose that superseded it so it's not rubbing against the hot metal radiator line.

At high speeds the vibration and heat *will* eventually generate a hole right through the extra sleeve and through the hose. The leak will travel down the hot metal rad line to the dip *right above* the electric radiator fan, which will atomise the fluid all over the interior of the engine compartment.

In your case, it's likely not the radiator fan clipping the hose.. anyway, have the above problem checked out even if your problem turned out to be something different.
