My 1994 Lumina with 3.1 has a metallic rattling noise under the hood. Any ideas on what this could be? I have replaced the auto tensioner and the water pump already. Thanks!

If the noise stays with the belt off, it's probably piston slap.
My '90 3.1 has done this for the 9 years and 200k miles I've driven it.
Had a rattling noise on a '92 Olds Cutlass with the 3.4 DOHC engine. W body like your Lumina, I believe. Belt tensioner did me no good either. Replaced the a/c compressor and that did it. It was the clutch bearing. You can replace the clutch bearing by itself, but my compressor was shot. Hope this helps.
