Buick LeSabre and blown head gasket(?)

My mother was driving her '92 LeSabre the other day when the car started over heating and blowing steam. Plastic fitting that comes off the intake manifold had broken off, replaced it with a new metal fitting and reconnected everything. Wanted to drain the radiator and found the drain c*ck no problem. What's the easiest way to get to the plugs in the block? Where are these located? Car starts up and it's emitting a lot of white smoke out of the pipe and under the hood. My first thought -- blown head gasket. I try to stay away from cars, (I stick to large trucks with more room to maneuver) so the steps broken down in the Chilton's to remove the head sound pain-stakingly long. Is this as difficult a procedure as I'm making it out to be (I'm going to have to fight a broken manifold bolt as well)? If it's something I can't fix myself in a few hours, I'd rather pass it off to a shop. I'd like to know what I'm getting into either way I go: does the time involved in making the repair myself out way the cost of the repair elsewhere. I'd appreciate any constructive advice you could offer. Thanks. mrm
