Car engine dies when I don't warm up atleast 5 minutes

Please help me

I have this 1995 Mitsubishi Galant and 3 months ago it wouldn't start as it started stalling on me before eventually dying. Pep Boys put a new fuel pump, that didn't work and then they said to put a new distributor (yes i know not to trust that crap, but I was in a new city, i would have never done that back home where i live...blah blah)

Ever since they put a fuel pump and distributor my car is crap. I must warm it up atleast 5 minutes with a couple seconds of giving the car gas before heading out, else if I simply turn the car on and start to drive the car acts really funny. When i start to accelerate the engine, it will hesitate badly causing the entire car to vibrate enormously before surging. And when I pull to a stop the engine gets weak and then dies on me, but i can easily start it up again. At higher speeds like on the highway the car is fine.

I do not get any of these problems when i do the warm up, but that is too long and i usually warm the car up for 10 minutes before heading out.

I took it to the dealership, they hooked it up to the computers and said everything is fine and they do not notice any problems driving it ( thats because by the time i drive there its warmed up and fine) I should leave it there for them to try though.

I was just wondering if you guys would have any ideas about my problems

Any help would very much be appreciated

  • put new spark plugs (but did not replace all) and 2 new oxygen sensors and new fuel filter

Sorry for this long essay

Shit, it sounds like you are starved for fuel, man. My first guess would have been clogged fuel filter. Second guess would have been fuel pump. Both have been replaced, though? Sheesh. Have you had your timing checked at idle and while accelerating? -Dave

If you didn't tell them there was a cold-start problem what would you expect? If you did and they didn't tell you to leave it overnight, then find another place to take your car.

There's a lot of things that could cause this and it's kind of hard to guess without knowing the mileage, engine size, etc. And you don't say if when it is warmed up, if it's curb idle speed is low. Has anyone cleaned the throttle body or checked for vacuum leaks? You always start with the simple stuff first.

The technician at the dealership said the timing was fine, but I'm not sure if he checked both idle and when accelerating.

thanks for the response dave

Yeah I told the dealership everything and they had their mitsubishi expert work on it. I just think its quite odd that right after Pep Boys installed a new fuel pump and distributor that the car started having these problems. I think the best bet is to leave it overnight at the body shop. thanks
