Ford Escort Overheats, Won't Restart

The #3 exh. valve is burnt not chipped. You may want to find out what caused that before you rebuild it.

The #1 piston is not scuffed, it looks like it got scraped when removeing the cylinder head.

Before you even think about repairs to that engine put a straight edge on the block and cylinder head to check for any warpage. If the cylinder head is warped you will likely need a new head as the cam journals will be warped also.

From your photos it is not possible to get a good look at the cylinder walls. Make sure they are not scuffed or discolored from heat before you re-use the block.

It may be cheaper to get a used or reman engine so you should check prices before you rebuild what you have.
