P0403 and P0401 Trouble Codes

Greetings! I downloaded the following codes out of my mom's 1999 Dodge Caravan with 120k miles. The MIL is on full time. I cleared the computer of the codes, but they came right back. Does the following point to a bad EGR valve assembly, or what??

ECU #=40 MIL is ON Vehicle Reports 2 Stored Trouble Code(s) TC1 - P0403 P0403 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Malfunction

TC2 - P0401 P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected No pending codes reported

Thanks! DataRanger

Check the obvious first, and make sure that the gas cap is on tight! Unless my memory has failed, this is the code that a loose gas cap can trigger.

No, that would be an EVAP system leak code, not an EGR code that would be triggered.

That's quite likely the cause, but restricted/carbon-clogged EGR passages might also be a possibility (not familiar with the EGR system on this engine..)

403 was the code I got last summer on my '98 GC replaced the EGR valve and all was well one of the elec. connection pins had corroded through.

It doesn't necessarily mean the EGR valve assembly is defective. The P0403 code is telling you there is a problem in the electronic control circuitry to the EGR valve. The P0401 code is telling you that the EGR valve isn't opening or opening sufficiently; that would probably result from the same control circuit fault. Although the EGR solenoid might be defective there might also be a connection problem, broken or shorted wire in the harness at some point. You'd be wise to do some more checking before tossing the EGR valve assembly!
