pitted rotors

why would this happen? I've never seen it before.

The pitting was much worse on the inner (engine-side) surfaces, and about the same on each front wheel. I do not live near salt water, but it has been a very humid and rainy year. The car was driven every day, not left to sit.

Approximately 8/7/03 09:11, Jack uttered for posterity:

Purely a WAG, but perhaps the brake puck on the inner side isn't riding close enough to the rotor? On most disk brakes, the pads should either touch the rotor very lightly or be a very very small distance away... close enough to keep crud scraped off the rotor and to keep the rotor surface nicely polished.

Year and make and model might help a real brake mechanic recognize a more specific issue.

I noticed the same thing today as I was poking around under my car. The inner right right rotor had small pits ! This car does sit for weeks at a time, in a garage.
