Then it isn't lifters. I see no way they can be affected by which gear you'rein. Sounds like timing chain guide or tensioner to me, especially if it'sgot some miles on it.

Take the plastic cover off between the engine and trans.  Make sure that allthe torque converter bolts are tight.  A lifter soud is more of a tick.  Youmight also have a cracked or broken flywheel.Tim

I'm sorry if I did not clarify in my original message. I want an easy answer. All the talk about timing chains and flywheels make me dread actually getting into the engine. Or worse yet, taking it to a repair shop and handing them the keys to my live savings. :) Thanks for all the help.

I would first be suspecting a weak engine mount letting some part of the exhaust hit the vehicle.
