Subaru Headgasket problems on the 2.5 boxer

Jan 29, 2006 2 Replies

Has anyone else noticed a lot of problems with the headgaskets on Subaru's 2.5L boxer engine? I've delt with three people 98k miles,

106k miles, and 78k miles, that have all dumped coolant from the tank even after the usual cooling system repairs. (thermostat, flush, waterpump) Just wondering if anyone else has seen the same thing going on.

Chris

Every 2.5 Subaru we have seen lately has head gasket seepage from the back of the driver's side. Subaru has a TSB for a "fix" which they call a conditioner. It's stop leak in a cute little bottle. They say if you put it in they will warranty the head gaskets 100,000 miles. Seems to stop the leaks -- at least for a while. Took two doses in on case I know off. Subaru does NOT want the expense of fixing these motors properly. They're not the first to do this. The HT4100 Cadillac V8 was infamous for head gasket leaks and GM's answer was officially sanctioned stop-leak.
