Thanks out to Daniel Stern

Earlier this week I got the 7440A (amber) bulbs and Narva Range Power

50 H1 I ordered from him last week. I installed the headlamps last night.

I haven't tried out the amber bulbs, but only wanted some as emergency spares - especially for road trips. The OE bulbs on my 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX do seem to look slightly "hazy". Perhaps its the amber coating degrading with use.

The Narva Range Power 50 bulbs are an improvement over the Philips long life bulbs. I had Osram Silverstar bulbs until I had a front end collision (both assemblies replaced). The bulbs that come with the replacement light assemblies are Philips LL. I had one heck of a time removing the left one in front of the battery. I gave up trying to get it out with the battery installed. I also had such a hard time getting the connector off that the filiment broke. I have plenty of used/new spares, so one less isn't a big deal.

The Narva packaging is really minimal - just a small cardboard box. The bulbs weren't marked "DOT" but the box is. Do I have to worry about this? We don't exactly have annual inspections in California.

Probably.

My mother stuffed her Subaru (Y2K Outback) into the back of a *parked* dumptruck a couple weeks ago. Says she "has no idea" how it happened. (that's motherese for "I wasn't paying attention"). She's fine, all five-foot-nothing of her, largely due to having had the airbags disconnected when she bought the car. $6500 or so worth of damage to the Subaru. You think it's easy to find ECE headlamps for an application like that? Well, it's not!

It's amazing how much better a properly-sized cardboard box protects bulbs in transit than some of the much more expensive and intricate fancy-pants (and admittedly very attractive) packaging some companies use.

Early production run of those bulbs. They meet all DOT specs.

You can if you want to, I guess. They're not blue or otherwise noncompliant; as long as your lamps are aimed correctly I can't see a CHP officer wanting to examine your H1 bulbs!

The Osram Silverstar bulbs come in a fairly nice package designed to keep the two bulbs from banging into each other. However - when I got them, one was loose although undamaged. There were bits of cardboard flakes on the bulb from the Narva package. I just cleaned it off with rubbing alcohol and an aerosol duster before installing it.

I suppose they could be inclined to pull over someone with otherwise DOT compliant "ricer blue" headlamps.

Dan,

Please send me your lighting site URL.

Someone on one of the news groups wants lights for some exotic (to me ;-) ) vehicle.

I will post your URL to that n.g. Thanks.
