World's cheapest small car (weird-lookin, but cheap!)

Hi folks, I would like all you guys to check out the world's cheapest car. Its supposed to cost only around $ 2000 (maybe a bit more) and its being launched in India...can you believe it. Its a bit odd looking, but then again...if you can buy a car at only 2 grand not many would actually complain (all hail the recession). Check out its recent pics on

I'm sure it won't meet the safety & emission standards of the US. For $2k hopefully it won't fall apart on the way home from the dealer.

Quote from another Web page: "Speaking at the unveiling ceremony at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi, Mr. Ratan N. Tata said, "I observed families riding on two-wheelers - the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby. It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family. Tata Motors' engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal. Today, we indeed have a People's Car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements and emission norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions. We are happy to present the People's Car to India and we hope it brings the joy, pride and utility of owning a car to many families who need personal mobility."

The Nano surely would not meet US safety or durability standards, but for countries (such as India) that have been badly damaged by their governments, the Nano is a giant step forward from what they have now.

Would the Air Car (it runs on compressed air, some, or all of them can also run on gasoline) meet U.S.specs? I want one.Or maybe an Aptera.

It looks like the Jetsons Car. About two or more years ago I read somewhere the Air Car won't be imported to America because the exterior body panels are glued on.Airbus and some of those Boeing Airplane exterior body panels are glued on, some other Airplane companies exterior body panels too, I think. cuhulin

Look up what a VW Bug was going for new in 1980. Labour is *always* a big cost of cars in North America and certainly the labour costs in India wouldn't be *near* as much.

I wonder why China isn't making Ford or GM clones and selling them for $5 or $6K. They seem to be able to do it with everything else. Maybe in a few more months when the Big Three are gone....

Actually, they are making Honda and Toyota clones.

Isn't there an Audi or two that has glued-together body parts?

In the 1960s, a new VW beetle cost $1,695, a full tank of gas for that car cost about $3.50.A new 1950 Ford car with 6 cylinder engine and no optional equipment/accessories coat $1,100.Most everything was less expensive back then and a dollar bought much more compared to nowadays.Compared to what a dollar was worth in 1900, todays dollar is worth less that four and a half cents, actually, mostly worthless. Most people don't even stop to pick up a penny if they see a penny laying on the ground, but I always do.A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned. cuhulin
