87" MR-2 atempts to start but stalls

I have just recently aquired a MR-2 the previos owner didnt have time to mess with so i got it for cheap.

The problem is it starts then stalls right out. I can rev it about once then it dies.

I have replaced the fuel filter distrib plugs wires. gave it a oil change and also checked the battery and coil which seem to be okay. Any suggestions? Maybe fuel pump or bad injector?

Previos owner had said the steering wheel was shaking badly on its drive home before it died like the engine was hesitating or had loss of power.

Has it been stood long? Bad fuel from being stood, maybe a perished vacuum line. Does it idle but not rev? Or will it not idle at all? Air filter condition?

AFM, or vac leak is my guess. ECU keeps it running for the first second or so, switches over to the sensors and dies as either sensor faulty or vac leak you havent noticed. Is there a fault code on the ECU?

if it's fuel injected, check carefully for any slight leak or crack in the hose/s after the air flow sensor. the idle circuit is usually separate from the idle circuit. they'll idle but crap out when you come off idle. it can be a bad fuel pump also. good luck, sammmm

Thanks guys for the tips. Um so far it seems to be leaning towards a fuel pump. If i leave the key in and turn the power on but not start it for 5-10 seconds the engine seems to get more fuel and runs a little longer then when i just key the the key and start it up.

I checked the vacum hoses all though old seem to be alright.

I do not have a code scanner or for sure on how to use one i am somewhat of a novice machanic atleast when it comes to computerized cars heh i am used to playing with old muscle cars.

I have purchased a haynes manual but it does not state any info on the diag port what it is odb? or what sort of scanner i might need, oddly you would think that info would be in their.

Thanks again guys

use a paper clip and bridge TE1 and E1 on the diagnostic port turn the key on and the fault light should flash not sure weather you have a 2 code or single code system one didgit codes have around 4.5 sec between them 2 didgit have about 2.5 secs

so if its 24 you get II.....IIII USA has a lot more codes than us in aussie so see what you get
