A random what?

I was out running around today doing some work, and a massive frontal system came in, with rain and some sleet and a lot of wind. I hopped in the car and went to start it and it didn't start the first time but started right up the second try, but then a "check engine" light came on.The water temp was fine, everything worked, no oil light or anything, so I took off and finished my work, then stopped by the neighborhood mechanic before going home. He checked it and reset the light, and told me that it was from a "random misfire". What the heck is THAT?I'm wondering if some moisture might have blown up under and onto the plug wires before I started it that time?He said dont worry about it, as long as it doesnt happen again.
