This car should have large black 'speed nuts'. Remove the covering and have a look.

Thanks for the answer. I dont know what you mean by 'speed nuts'? Is it something like quarter-turns? And do you mean that those may be located behind the covering? TIA

"Speed nuts" are square washers that have tabs sticking into the opening for the screw. Instead of having to thread them on, you can just push the washer onto the screw and the tabs will hold the nut in place. I do not think that the light fixture is held in place with speed nuts. I think they are held in place with conventional nuts or screws. When you remove the screws that hold the light fixture in place, the fixture's rubber gasket often sticks to the body work so you may have to pull or push a little to get it off.

They are like plastic 'Wing nuts'. There should be a couple outside the fabric cover, and maybe too more behind. It's been over a year since I was in the boot of a similar car (we don't get that model here in the US) but it should be similar.

They started using them about '94 or so. My '95 Tercel had them holding in the rear light assemblies, and my Scion has them, too. Also, 2005 Matrix and Corollas.

I was actually amazed that I could change the lamps in the rear assemblies with no tools!

I am probably going to jinx myself by saying this, but I can only recall changing 1 rear bulb in a Toyota since 1978, and that was a CHMSL bulb for our 97 Avalon about a month ago.

I really like to hear this last one. Yes, Toyota has control over the voltage and they assure it willl never be too high. Thats why you dont have to change the bulbs so often.
