Gas prices

No need. His son would have taken the throne.

Face it, Joe. As much as Bush has fumbled the ball, and I'm not saying it isn't major, his screw-ups are based upon the foundation laid by Jimmy.

He was a royal screw-up in the middle east.

The Shah was installed by us, pretty much. You know that. Since when is it our business to install or uninstall leaders of other countries? But, it's part of our sordid history.

What bullshit. The good old USA has been meddling in *everything* everywhere* for a looooong time. Its called Empire and those who benefit the least from killing for resources are the ones called upon to die for them. Remind me, how did the Shaw wind up leading Iran?

Sure. Just as England had a hand in the creation of "royalties" and "empires". It's all BS.

But my assertion stands. The foundation for these screw-ups was not laid by Bush. Historically, as YOU know, we never understood the culture or religion.

Interesting News flashback:

April 11, 1988 Carter Oil Tax Hangs by a Thread SPECIAL TO THE NEW YORK TIMES

LEAD: It will be the end of the line for one of the most vigorously debated pieces of legislation of the Carter Administration, the 1980 Crude Oil Windfall Profit Tax, if President Reagan signs Congress's omnibus trade bill.

It will be the end of the line for one of the most vigorously debated pieces of legislation of the Carter Administration, the 1980 Crude Oil Windfall Profit Tax, if President Reagan signs Congress's omnibus trade bill.

Because oil prices have fallen so sharply since 1980, by more than 50 percent, the tax now yields no revenues to the Treasury.

Are you saying that the words "British empire" don't belong together?

That doesn't change the fact that we have meddled. The Shah wouldn't have lasted long without our support. When Allende became inconvenient, "things" happened. When Musharaff becomes inconvenient, he will be gone with our help. The Saudi royal family would not only be gone by now, but probably all dead without our support.

DH, these guys are supporting the Shah of Iran now, for heaven's sake--one of the most brutal dictators in history [rolling eyes] ;-)

The dynastic Shahs' brutal rule of Iran since their installation by the C.I.A. in 1954 finally led to the Ayatollah's, the Mullah's, and the Religious Right's overthrow of the Shah in 1979. It wasn't Carter's fault, for heaven's sake.

The C.I.A. is one of the least democratic parts of our government. We need better Congressional oversight of that agency if we are to remain true to our democractic principles.

By the way, Carter didn't raise the Fed Funds rate. Federal Reserve chairman Paul Vaulker did that in order to reign in the disastrous inflation we were experiencing. Vaulker succeeded marvelously, so much so that rates, /for the most part/, have been in decline since 1981, and that spurred the stock bull that began in '82 (it wasn't Raygun).

Anyway, back to our topic of cars. No more politics, please.

Umm, Vaulker = Volcker. Now let's stick to our topic of cars :-)

Talk politics some place else.

Not at all. I was speaking of those created in the middle east, such as the House of Saud. Ridiculous, self-serving thrones.

That we have meddle is EXACTLY what I'm saying. But give credit where it's due. It didn't start with this presidency.

All true. But still not the fault of this presidency. He's picking up the ball thrown at him, in ignorance, and we'll be paying for it until someone ends the game.

What do you mean? You guys have been talking politics day-in and day-out for months. Stick to cars, and we'll all be one happy family :-)

And what, in your highly valued opinion, do Toyotas run on? Oh, I forgot, you wouldn't know that, since you've never owned a Toyota.

DUH! I owned more Toyotas and Lexus vehicles than you, my friend.. I was one of the first Toyota owners in the county, my first was a Toyepet back in '57 that I bought from the oldest Toyota dealer in the US. I was his first customer LOL

Maybe your car. Mine will run on various mixtures of kerosene, vegetable oil, jet fuel, motor oil, (bio)diesel, gasoline, all sorts of things. :)

Diesels do it by squeezing real hard.

Hey it's not all doom and gloom.

High prices now mean the oil in the ground will last a bit longer and prolong low prices further into the future.

Having oil available will be quite handy when we want things like plastic, tyres, fertiliser (food), goods transport(food), air travel, etc. Stop wasting it in your silly cars driving to McDonalds for dinner!

I commute every day on a scooter that uses 1 gallon per month. This makes me immune to petrol prices. It doesn't matter if they go up or down by 50%, even 200%, I can afford it easily. If you can't afford petrol, change your indulgent lifestyle!
