Actually, the distributor-less ignitions currently in vogue seem to be pretty reliable because there are no moving parts to wear. A pickup senses crank angle and position and the coil on each cylinder fires when commanded. No mechanical link to self-destruct or leak or wear or get out of adjustment.
GM had some issues with the crank angle sensor on their early attempts at distributor-less ignition but I haven't heard any complaints lately.
