Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. 2.2L auto

235K. Been fine but after a few miles of city driving and then 10 miles hi-way, I exited and stopped. Apparently the tranny didn't downshift. Engine lugged down and car barely moved until reaching aound 30mph. Same thing next 2 stops. After sitting overnite, car ran fine altho I didn't drive it far. Used to work on cars before computers and still do easy stuff but understand these have 2 solenoids, 2 speed sensors, and, of course, the ECM. Anyone had this problem and have an idea where to start? Thanks for any suggestions. (Fluid changed about every 50K but screen not cleaned that I know of. Engine runs fine.)

You never maintained the trans as the manual said and you ask here first! Go change the filter and oil.

Thanks- I intend to but if I'm reading correctly the solenoids are accessible thru the pan cover and I thought if they were the most likely problem I might replace them while it was off and drained. Sorry I didn't ask for advice before I had a problem. BTW, instead of going by schedule B of the owner's manual (check every 24 months) we went by our service rep who said to change fluid about every 50K and there was no servicable filter. Saw in the Haynes that it should have been every 30K and the screen can be cleaned. (I did read the Haynes

1st by the way but since it's shifting again I'm not sure what the most likely problem is/was and had hopes someone might have actually experienced the problem and knew the answer.) But I'll change the fluid, clean the screen and see what happens. Again, appreciate your input.

The screen is a filter and cannot be cleaned as the dirt goes inside the filter, many issues are dirt in the oil or a clogged filtet

Don't drive the car much but finally managed to read the codes and it indicates defective #1 solenoid. Pulled pan and found it. I'll be testing it tomorrow. Having two Camrys and a Toyota truck ('91) it's been a long time since I've actually had to work on a car.:D
