Is there a method for removeing`carbon build up inside the cylinders besides yanking the heads? I tried the slick -50 fuel treatment[$10] with do help.I have to use premium fuel.Compression pressure is way over
There is one way:...water. This can be introduced safely thru a water injection kit. I have heard some old wives tales where the engine is revved (to stop it snuffing) while water is poured in to the intake. This would be a little difficult to do on the Camry, plus I dont think it is all that safe.
Water injection, properly done, is a good thing. It not only keeps the combustion chambers clean, but extends burn time, giving a smoother power-stroke similar to using hi-octane fuel I suppose.
Another way is to find a safe area where you can run the car at 3/4- full throttle for 5 or more minutes. This will increase the chamber temperature and burn-off some of the carbon. Bonneville??
Thank you Jason.Any Idea who has a system like this? Thank you Phillip.Actually it's an 86 CRESSIDA .No one is discussing them right now so I went to Camry.Mileage is unknown ecause I had a used engine installed[supposedly from Japan with 30K orso] It does use oil, about 1 quart for 700 miles.I had the valve seals replaced on warranty about 40,000 ago,but it seems like they are bad again which is probably causing the carbon. Whatbis a Italian tune-up?

Here's something to try: Pull out a spark plug. Turn the engine over until that piston is near TDC. Look in the spark plug hole with a flash light. What you are looking for is a fairly even coating of carbon across the entire piston crown. IF you find the center area is coated but the edges of the piston crown near the cylinder wall are quite clean ... even shiney clean, this indicated oil ring failure.
Italian Tune-up: Running the engine along at heavy throttle with the RPM around maximum torque for about 10 miles. Alternatively, a long steep mountain road running in the lower gears with the revs up around max torque.
Heh heh... yes. "Blowing out the carbon" predates the muscle car era by a decade or more ... back when we had no exhaust emission concerns, everything had carb(s), Kettering ignition, plenty of lead in fuel, and engine oils weren't as ash free as they are now. Nowadays, you rarely see a puff of particulates from the exhaust during a hard romp to merge with freeway traffic.
Thanks phillip.By the way I used to use the old "I was just trying to blow out the carbon officer" back in the 60s and I believe it worked once in my small hometown'
I live in Aust, so I can't help, you, but try putting the words: water injection- in your search engine and it should bring up some US suppliers for you.
