Just aquired an '88 Camry LX with just under 98K and in very nice cosmestic

Hmm, whats it thinking? I am guessing you mean it is maybe misfiring or not firing and has low power? Could be a spark plug wire grounding out.. Pull the plug wires and see if they are oil soaked. Try new plugs while your in there, an air filter too see if anything is obstructed in the air path...PCV valve working? IF those were fuel injected maybe clogged injectors. Sounds like something any garage could find in a few minutes...
