Your thoughts?

The front struts are bolted to the steering knuckle, so when the wheels turn, the struts turn. The upper end of the shaft from the struts is bolted to the upper strut mount which includes a bearing. This upper strut mount is bolted directly to the metal body of the car such that any play in the upper strut mount is transmitted as noise to the body. This is a common problem, and there is an improved part to replace your upper strut mounts. The price you were quoted included new struts also. To replace the strut mounts you need a spring compressor (potentially dangerous as it contains the force necessary to support the weight of the vehicle) and to remove the struts. Thanks Daniel; When I replaced the rubber spring seats (insulators, as Toyota calls them) I looked at the mounts, admittedly not in detail, but they seemed pretty much OK. I was not aware that there is a bearing inside the mount, I thought that strut body rotates arond the damper shaft, which would then be fixed at the top. Thanks again for the tip, now I know what to do next :-) And yes, price quoted to me included parts, but that is still way much more than I paid for the parts (and my six hours of amateur labor)...
