I notice lately in the colder weather (40 degrees F or so) when I first start the engine (V6) I hear a clanking noise for about 4 to 5 minutes and perhaps maybe in 1 to 2 seconds apart in clanks. Then it seems to go away when the engine is hot. I don't see any fluid leaks underneath so I'm thinking for now, it's not serious. I want to see if I notice it later in the day when the engine isn't as cold and the outside temp is higher.
Just asking if anyone already knows.
I have a 91 4Runner that I thought had a bad or loose lifter under the valve cover. When the motor would rev up the clanking got louder. Turns out it was the timing belt hitting the timing belt cover. I had it replaced and everything is great now.
One way to check is to take a long screw driver and hold it on parts in the area of where you think the sound is coming from. Put the plastic handle to your ear and listen.
