22RE RV Cam adjustments

I just installed an RV cam in my 86 toyota pickup, 22RE, carbureted. I am not getting any boost in power. Is there some trick to adjusting the carb, timing, or valve gaps?



I installed a new head, and entire front end. Timing Chain, Oil Pump, Water pump Timing Chain Cover.



I gapped the valves to the standard 0.008" intake and 0.012" exhaust. Set the timing to 0 deg TPD.



I then regapped them after 2 weeks.



Standard NGK Plugs.



I am not trying to make a wall crawler, I just thought I should notice a difference. The engine runs smooth and does it's job.



This is a 2WD hybrid truck. It has the entire rear end from a 86 4WD Toyota, so I have 6 bolt rears and 5 bolt fronts.

What did you use for a new chain? Did it have two different sets of marks? You may have to advance your timing a little. How big of difference is in both cams?

I simply replaced the chain, guides, tensioner and both sprockets, with factory spec new parts.

The marks are immaterial. I have done 4 head gaskets on 22Rs in the last 2 months. Once you have done a few you realize that with the main crank shaft set "spline key up", lower sprocket mark down, the engine at top dead center, the mark on the top sprocket mark should be a few degrees to the left (passenger side).

I tried that and didn't gain anything.

Not sure. The RV cam was a gift from a friend who tried it in his 4WD briefly. It didn't give him enough power boost, so he went up to a level 3 cam.

It is supposedly the stock cam for toyota commercial chassis', factory flatbeds, Chinook RVs and Uhaul trucks with 22R motors.

From what I can find on the web, no engine modifications should be necessary to use an RV cam, but there is no info as to how to tune to one.

I used to have the same problem, i put a new crowel cam to my 94

4runner 22re but most of the mechanic do not know how to ajust the timing because they need a special method to do it, so try to find someone with that special tool. Hope u solve your problem.

I emailed both dealers selling 22R RV cams on Ebay, and one emailed back to change the valve lash from 0.008" intake and 0.012" exhaust, to

0.007" intake and 0.009" exhaust. I reset my valves last night and ZOOM... BIG difference. Lots more power.

I will let you guys know how it turns out.

The truck is much happier. Lots more power.
