91 4Runner Speedometer access

I've gotten tired of the continuous squealing from the speedometer in my 91 4Runner. I've got a great deal of the dash pulled apart, but for the life of me I can't seem to figure out how to get at the back of the speedometer.

I had hoped that I could pull out the gauge assembly, but I'm unable to pull this out very far. I assume that this is because of the connections on the back.

Can anyone provide any suggestions for this problem ?

My 4runner was doing the same thing. What I did was unattach speedometer cable from the back of the panel and add some high temp grease to the end of the cable. The end of the cable is a plastic piece. If I remimber correctly the plastic piece that plugs in the back of the panel is about 1 inch long and square shape. This fix lasted for about 2.5 years

I'm assuming that the 91 LHD is the same in design as the RHD. I've the RHD so may be of use. First things first, remove the Speedo cable and loosen all clips and holders from gearbox to firewall.

Undo the screws that hold the instrument panel in and with Speedo cable loose you can pull it quite some way forward. I used a battery drill at the gearbox end of the cable at highish speed while I forced light grease down from the dash end until it started to come through the bottom. Never head another whisper from the cable and that was two years ago. Even the Speedo needle moved smoother after that.

The trick is to have the cable inner spinning while you pour oil/grease down the sheath. The other option which was to remove the inner and pump heaps of thicker grease down the outer was decided as not a good idea as I didn't think that the cable would go back in as easy as it came out with a heap of grease in there.

Hope that helps. Scotty

PS: With the instrument cluster out you just twist the cable holder and out she comes.

All assuming that the US versions are the same as the AUS versions.
