I have the spare tire down and want to know how to grease the mechanism. It is basically a winch in a bulky case - what do you apply grease to and how do you get it there?

Probably easiest to take it off so you can clean and lubricate it easier. I know some folks just dunk it in old gear or motor oil every year or so.
In my '94 4Runner, I just spray the cable with a light coat of high-tech lube, and spray the U-joints in the mechanism. However, we don't have a lot of salt on the roads in winter here in Virginia.
