RAV4--improving gas mileage?

Wrong!

Its a five speed manual. The rpm don't go way up like in a slush box, so you don't loose that enegry.

Engine is least efficient at part open throtle. You get better mileage if you opent the throttle up and lug the engine (may induce detomation if you are using cheap gas). Skip 4th if you don't have to. Don't bounce the engine off the rev limiter at the red line.. Move into overdrive as soon as possible. Check your tire pressure regularly.

Anticipate red lights and coast into the stop.

Lobby the lunkhead politicians to coordinate traffic lights. The most expensive thing you do, mialeage wise is to come to a complete stop every block.

And when you have the throttle wide open at low RPM, you're accelerating... how?

The idea is to get the RPM up to the top of the torque curve and keeping it there unitl you reach cruising speed. Once you get there, you move to the highest gear possible. That will give you the lowest rpm possible and the best mileage possible.

Subarus are popular with Sierra Clubbers and transplants from the east. Cal natives tend to drive Honda, Nissan and Toyota or Lexus and BMW if in their price range.
