Timing chain, `89 22RE

Oct 10, 2003 4 Replies

Greetings,

My `89 4x4 truck has 170k miles on original 22RE engine having regular 5k oil changes Castrol 10w40 + BG MOA. What is the scoop on installing a new timing chain? Also, is it a double chain like my previous `81 truck had or is a single chain?

TIA Chuck

Single unless its been changed to double by someone.

Thanks for those excellent instructions Roger, they'll be handy when I do the work.

Question though: Do I need to do this now or should I keep driving until there is a sign it's time to install the new one? I know it was really bad to have the chain break on an `81 22R due to the negative clearance. (That's why they were double chains I guess).

Same issue on the 22RE, its an interference engine as well. I changed mine about 3 years ago just so I would know when it had been changed, since I had no idea when it had last been done on my '85.

Ok- I'll just do it to be sure.

By the way - that's a nice and useful website you put up. Easy to navigate and very informative. The article on DIY tire siping is good too. Thanks.
