Transmission fill level for '98 4Runner Ltd 4wd

Anyone know the actual fluid capacity of Toyota's 1998 A340F automatic transmission?

Just changed the trans filter and began adding fluid. The owner's manual and Chilton's book both showed 2.1 Qt. of Dexron III ATF. This seemed like too little in comparison to what wads drained out. Sure enough after adding

2 Qt it barely showed on the stick. Kept running engine in neutral, shifting, and adding fluid. After 4 qt. it was close to the mark. Drove it for a few miles and topped it off. No sign of leaks or white exhaust smoke.

Also the gasket sold with the filter was not the right one. I had to use the gasket for an A340E and filter for an A340F. Tried three different parts stores with the same result. Do I have some kind of hybrid tranny or is this normal. I've only had my 'Runner for about 30,000 miles and it is truly wonderful.
