'70 Beetle 1302s misfire

First post, on behalf of someone at work so bear with me here?

Car: UK 1970 Beetle 1302s - reconditioned engine (20 miles)

Engine runs ok at low revs, but as when the throttle is opened it misfires and the revs drop back down. Distributor/plugs/points/HT leads/timing/air intake has all be checked (replaced if necessary) and is fine but still the problem persists. Carb is a Webber twin port which isn't quite the right one for the engine - could this be an issue?

The fuel in the tank is about a year old (mixture of unleaded and

4-star leaded) - is it worth draining this out and putting some fresh fuel in?

Any thoughts/comments appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Have you checked the ignition advance is working by using a timing light? Also, try a different coil too just toeliminate that. Other than that it could be the carb has a blocked jet, can you smell fuel when it misfires? Maybe the fuel cut off switch on the carb isn't working properly, it should click when you turn the ignition on. Check the fuel pump by using a jam jar and turning the engine with the coil lead firmly earthed away from the pump. Old petrol tends to run hotter and can contain water from condensation in the tank which won't help.

sounds to me like you have got an air leak on the inlet manifold.... check gasket seals and carb to manifold gasket.. check mating faces are clean and smooth also.
