Brake issue...

Hey folks,

Quick question...about once every couple of days, my normally fine feeling brake pedal will go to the floor once with no resistance and no braking action, but the next pump will be fine...and it will be normal acting for a couple days. In the past couple years, I have replaced all the wheel cylinders and brake hoses, and I feel that the system has been bled correctly. The MC is about 10 years old (Varga), and it holds the pedal (i.e. I can push the brake pedal, and it "holds" where it stops and doesn't move to the floor). The occasional going-to-the-floor bothers me because I know that it can happen at a bad time (it just hasn't yet).

My thoughts are:

1) The MC is bad, or 2) There is air in the system even though I have bled the brakes thoroghly.

What do you guys think? Is this a symptom of the MC not being bench bleeded?

Thanks,

It can hapen with your brakes not ajusted up - takes a pump of the pedel to get the shoes in contact with the drums - depending on how long since you last used them.

Also check for fluid leaks - same thing.

Does the fluid level stay up or do you need to top up ?

Possible, but by no means certain.

No, air would make the pedal soft every time.

Bench bleeding is NEVER necessary on our cars, and would not cause or cure this problem.

I would check to make sure that the return springs on each wheel were all working right and that all the brakes were properly adjusted.
