I've heard lots of times that No.3 Cylinder overheats and we get a burnt exhaust valve more often there coz the oil cooler was in the way. Thats why VW revised the design and created the doghouse right? Well, did that TOTALY solve the problem? Also where there differences between the fans lets say of a 1300 vs a 1600?
Thanx, BugThug

Hi I wrote The Type IV Upright Conversion Manual and did years of my own research on the doghouse. If you want to really have a cool running engine, extend the doghouse and put a T-4 cooler in place of the T-1. Bolts right up and will cool 30% better then the T-1 cooler. On T-4 uprights it cools even better because the T-4 engine is so much more powerful that the engine is hardly working on a bug so it runs cooler to begin with. If you want to see some photos of the extended doghouse go to my site

then go to Engine Photos. As Bill said thefanhousings are very well designed, or VW would have made some major changesover 70 years and a Zillion cars.Joe Cali- Next Generation
