1989 Volvo 240 Repair Guide? Which one is best?

Hi Folks!...I'm new here. I'm also the new owner of a 1989 240 Gl Wagon with 140000 kms. A great deal, but the car came with some small problems. I live abroad and need to buy a "how to book" that can help me with repairs ( some already needed)

which is the best one to get and have sent overseas?

It might help if you specified which country the car is in. In different countries, the cars may have different engines, transmissions, and other equipment, so you'll want a manual for the cars in that country.

In the US, the manual from Bentley Publishers is considered good, but since you refer to kms, the car is probably not a US model.

The Bentley manual is still probably the best choice, overseas Volvos didn't change *that* much, most of the differences were actually pretty minor. The Haynes manual is another good choice.

I like the Haynes manual as well, it is general enough that a non-mechanic can understand, and sometimes good enough for a mechanic to reference (torque specs, etc..) Haynes are available world-wide.

Is there no such thing as a Volvo Factory Service Manual available on CD in PDF format like there is for Suzuki Samurais ?

Given that 240's have been around for so long and have probably out-sold Samurais by several magnitudes and probably have a larger loyal following, one would think that there would be. I paid less than $20 for the Samuria CD on eBay and it included a copy of the Haynes manual, along with the Factory Service Manual.

(I have Haynes' for all of the vehicles I've owned and have often found them lacking in specifics and detail).

I would take a Chiltons anyday over a Haynes. Lots more detailed info. Just my .02 Rich

IF you can get a copy of the fiche, it's very very useful. Exploded diagrams and exact part numbers.

Chiltons? For what? I've had about a half dozen Chiltons manuals and they've all been garbage, they tend to cover a bunch of different models over about a 20 year span and have very little specific information. The Chilton's Volvo manual I had covered 240, 260, 740, and 760 cars from the early 80's to '93 and wasn't much thicker than the Haynes manual I have for the 240.
