2001 V70 very high miles.

I have the opportunity to purchase a 2001 v70 2.4t that's got 162k miles on it. The car is immaculate, never been in collision and operates well. Although the miles don't scare me away, I don't want to get into a situation where I'm going to have throw a ton of money at the car for known high miles issues. It's going to be a secondary car, doing 15 or 20 miles of driving a day so it won't get a lot of abuse. I believe 2001 is the first year for this new model v70 so that's a bit of the reason for my concern. Specifically I want to know how the engine/turbo are with such miles on them and what a worst case scenario would be. I'll probably be spending under

4,000 dollars for the vehicle so even spending a couple thousands in eventual repairs would still net me a solid car.

The typical suspects are in good condition, new tires, new front brakes new brake assist, all electronics are operational and the car has a good service history.

Currently I have a 2000 v40 with 130k miles which I use as my primary vehicle and it's been a solid car with nothing other that usual wear items needing replacement. That's why I'm not scared off but again, I want to find out about what are the "typical" issues.

Thanks in advance.

Check the service records carefully to be sure all required service was done at least on schedule if not more frequently. Also, have an experienced Volvo mechanic give the car a pre-purchase inspection.

Yeah, thanks. I was heading that route. I'm going to talk to my mechanic tomorrow. My gut's telling me that if the rest of the car is that good then the other things were probably cared for as well. You don't get to 162k miles without regular maintenance. I pretty much want to make sure there aren't any hidden time bombs with the car, this being the first model year. Before I take the leap though, I will go over the service records, but just the fact that they are there again is reassuring.

The purchase price will be appx 6,500. I'm planning on a trade in that should bring the cost to 4k. I didn't have the time to go through the service records but will do that before I take the plunge.

We have (among other Volvos) a 2001 V70 (non-turbo) that has been as reliable car as any other Volvo we've had. 85kmiles so far, and no major issues to worry about. I don't think the first-year thing is an issue.

85k is hardly major mileage!!

Whether the number of miles is significant or not is really dependent on whether the car has been maintained. A car with 85,000 miles that had little more than oil changes every 12k miles at the local quick lube shop is a disaster waiting to happen.

To be honest, our 97 S70 with 95k on the clock hasn't wanted anything else doing to it other than routine servicing according to the book! I change the oil and filter at home every 5k, and it goes to the local trusted garage every 10k, regardless of whether the service light is on or not.

Brake pads when needed, tyres when needed, 1 set brake discs, a/c regas, repair to cooling fan controller, afew bulbs and thats it.

But it usually gets you past the first year.

It's about 180% of the US national average...How far ~should~ we be driving?

I should think that within 85 kilomiles, we would know if there are any "first model year" issues, which was the question of the original post.

Just trying to help, ya know...
